Hurricane Harvey Response
In the aftermath of Harvey, there are three basic stages: Rescue, Relief and Recovery. We have seen and heard about so many incredible stories of RESCUE, as people have entered flooded areas in boats, or even waded into areas to bring people to safety. We are likely on the tail-end of the rescue phase. We are currently in the RELIEF phase, where churches and other organizations have opened their doors to provide shelter and items necessary for survival. This phase is crucial, as many have been displaced and are developing plans for the future. Some have lost everything. Others are waiting for the water to recede in order to assess damage. This process will be short-lived as well, possibly within weeks, as people begin rebuilding their lives, which takes us into the important phase three: RECOVERY.
As people begin the process of RECOVERY, the most important thing we can do is help with clean up, including tearing out wet carpet and sheetrock, removing ruined furniture, cleaning and disinfecting, and potentially some light construction, as well as providing meals, washing clothes, taking care of children, etc... There will be tons of opportunities to meet needs like this in our community for months to come - think marathon, not sprint. The most important thing is that although we will meet practical needs for families, we would really like to build long-term relationships with them, and bring the love, peace and hope of Jesus in the process.
Here are two links to help get the process started - "I NEED HELP" and "I CAN HELP." If your family or someone you know has been affected by Harvey, fill out the "I need help" form and give us specific details about the type of work you need done. If you are willing to volunteer, please fill out the "I can help" form. There are several options from which to choose on how you can get involved, as well as a section to identify your specific skill set. We will form teams as we receive information from you. To get the ball rolling, we have identified several homes on Honea Egypt that are in need of repair. We will gather on Saturday morning, 9/2 at 9:00 to begin helping them with recovery.
Here is one more link, "DONATE." If you would like to partner with us by giving a financial donation, 100% of your donation will go towards recovery efforts in our community.
In the coming weeks, we will hear plenty of incredible humanitarian efforts in our city. And we will do our part, right here in our own back yard. I'm so proud of all the stories I've already heard of how you've responded during this crisis. This is just the beginning. Extraordinary God-activity awaits all who say yes!
